About Us

The Friends of Margam Park was re-formed in 2006 and continues to flourish with an ever increasing membership. Our objectives  are to conserve and enhance Margam Country Park, protect its natural beauty, raise the parks profile, increase public awareness and work with the Local Authority as well as other appropriate organisations. The Friends provide walks with an historical interest, in the summer months together with other activities on a voluntary basis.

Who We Are

We are a volunteer group with a membership that spans each corner of the country. We at the Friends now have a membership of both young and old, reaching  over 200 hardworking, dedicated members. We are always open to new members and invite you to join us. ​

Our History

Since 2006 we have obtained grants: to provide access steps to Capel Mair, the casting of a plaque to identify the location of the old Margam House, extended the existing cycle route within the Park, and provided benches for visitors. Recently the Friends have produced a DVD on the history of Margam Park, thanks to a grant from Community First. More over, we have carried out a considerable amount of work to enable us to open an Exhibition Centre but this idea is currently on hold pending extensive work on the proposed building. The Friends are also involved in a survey of the Abbey ruins which was undertaken by the Glamorgan/Gwent Archaeological Trust. Future plans include a survey of Capel Mair to try and determine the extent of the archaeology, a dig on Mynydd-y-Castell to attempt to ascertain the extent of the Silurian occupation, and the creation of a comprehensive archive.
